Garrett Coffland's projects for the 2018 Benton County Fair could not have been more different. One took over 100 hours and the help of his father and others; the other just an hour or two in the kitchen. Garrett, accompanied by his parents, Tracy and Amanda, drove to the 4-H exhibit building in a Shriner parade car he had restored. Garrett's project book shows how he restored the exterior, choosing a green theme. After attempting to rebuild the motor and realizing parts to make it run were no longer available, Garrett powered the car with the engine from a push mower. He was all smiles as his friends watched him roll through the fairgrounds. He also remembers the many hours it took. Later, Garrett discussed the project with a judge. Also on Tuesday, he discussed, with another judge, a completely different project: A fresh peach pound cake. The car, said Garrett, was much more fun to do than the pound cake. Yet, says Tracy, the pound cake is very good. Garrett was just one of many 4-H members who brought their projects to the Fair on Tuesday for the judging which begins the annual event. Along with the older 4-H members, the Cloverbud Kids brought their projects. Among them was Lily Hesson, who showed the Cloverbud judge how her grandma, Kim Staab taught her to knit without needles. Lily explained what she learned as she wrapped yellow yarn around her fingers. Her mom, Ashley, said Lily's grandma taught her the technique by showing her a Youtube video. The judges will decide by the end of Tuesday which projects will represent Benton County at the Iowa State Fair in August. Those will be on display together in the 4-H Building. The projects included crafts, woodworking, sewing, baking, photography and many more skills. Tucker Clark of the North Eden Willing Workers led a project to help keep the fairgrounds clean. He helped set up a recycling program, and the club used its fund to buy recycling containers which are spread out throughout the fairgrounds. The club members also take turns doing clean-up duty during the fair. See more photos HERE.
