The marching band sat.
The symphonic band played a march.
And before playing songs from the "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," the band members watched a video about a summer holiday: July 4.
During Monday's Winter Pops Concert, Band Director Karl Smith showed a video of the 2005 July 4 Parade in Washington, D.C. That year, Vinton-Shellsburg was one of the bands that represented Iowa in the parade down Constitution Avenue.
Vinton-Shellsburg again has the honor of representing Iowa in Washington, D.C., on July 4, 2011. Mr. Smith shared the details of the trip -- including the laying of a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery -- at the beginning of Monday's concert. He also showed a video made after the band's last trip to D.C.
The Marching Band performed first Monday evening, playing the songs from its 2010 show featuring tunes from the "Titanic" musical. The Symphonic Band then played a Greek folk song collection, some music from "Grinch" and the "El Capitan March" by Sousa.
