AmeriCorps members struggled to trudge through thick mud on Thursday morning as they helped the VPRD staff at work on the new playground project at Riverside Park.
Rainy weather and mud has hindered the project for a few weeks now.
With shovels and even a hose used to try to siphon water from the muddy area, the crews were digging the holes for the purpose of removing as much of the excess water from the dirt as possible.
One team also dug a large hole for the base of the merry-go-round.
VPRD Director Brad Barker said that a work day may be announced in the near future to help spread the 100,000 pounds of rubber tire mulch around the equipment after it is installed.
