Several Vinton-Shellsburg High School students plan to participate in a nationwide school walk-out to protest school shootings at 10 a.m. this morning. "We have a couple things planned," said Sadie Mauer, who organized the February protest at VSHS a few days after a former student killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Mauer said others planned to join her, but she did not know how many.
"I don’t think we will know who will be there until it happens," Mauer says.
V-S Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock said school officials have been working with students, law enforcement and other community members to ensure a safe learning environment.
"Today is the National School Walkout which is organized by students. While I will not be walking with them, I do support their cause of wanting to stop school violence across the United States," says Hainstock. "While we have not experienced the tragedy so many others have over the last few years, we have been forever changed because of the events that have occurred in Columbine, Parkland, the most recent event in Great Mills and all of the ones in between. We continue to consider ways to make our schools safe for all students – this includes physically and emotionally. We need to form partnerships and alliances with our students, our families, other schools, and local organizations to provide a safe environment so all students can focus on their learning."
