Josh, Kim, Jonah and Hattie Meyer Kim Meyer, who has worked with computer systems for Vinton-Shellsburg school for several years, has become the first woman appointed to serve on the Vinton Municipal Electric Utility (VMEU) Board. Mayor Bud Maynard, after consulting city council members, appointed Meyer to fill a vacancy on that board. "We thought it important to have someone with strong technology knowledge and how it will tie into the iVinton project," said the Mayor. "We also wanted someone who could come in with fresh ideas and help the VMEU and the City advance technology wise. She has great drive and is very vested in the community with a young family and being employed by the school. We all think she will be a great addition to the board." Maynard explained that under Vinton policies, the mayor with council approval appoints all the members of the VMEU board. The members each serve 6-year terms. "I made the conscious decision to let everyone have a say in whom was chosen," Maynard says. "I don't feel one person can have a true representation of the entire community therefore I decided that we as a group would select members of all the boards. It's important that the whole group shapes the future, not just one person." Kurt Karr of the iVinton Committee praised Meyer's efforts and technological knowledge. "She has been active in the effort to create a local communications utility since we first began work on the election," said Karr. "I believe her work experience and involvement in the communications utility will help the VMEU board work through the issues related to the internet, phone, and cable services the community has asked for." Meyer's first job at VS was Director of Technology and Curriculum Director. Now her title is Director of Teaching and Learning, which includes overseeing the TLC Grant, district assessments, and curriculum work. She has also been the VSHS 1:1 laptop computer program coordinator for the past seven years, although Brandon Farmer, who replaced her as the Tech Director, is starting to assume more of those duties.
