By Julie Zimmer Because vision and literacy go hand-in-hand, Vinton Lions reconnected with kindergartners over a few good books on the third annual Lions literacy meet-up at Tilford Elementary May 3. These were the same students they screened for vision earlier. Students and Lions read one-on-one in the classrooms before and after the club mingled with older students for lunch. The Lions also donate funds (through the final classroom book orders of the year) toward ensuring every child takes at least one book home to keep. Lions were impressed with the teachers' and students' work this year as demonstrated in the reading skills of the students they met. Vinton Lion Casey Keeling and 20-some other Lions around the room listen to kindergartners read Vinton Lion Dennis Lasaur and a Vinton kindergartener talk over a story they are reading together at the club's annual literacy event. Vinton club president Rob Levis poses with one of the Tilford students. The students were also treated to a visit from Benton County Sherriff Lions memberRon Tippett who also reads with the kindergartners.
