Benton County Speedway racing fans donated more than $2,000 to an organization called Iowa’s Bravest to help buy items and postage to send care packages to U.S.troops overseas.

Six drivers were selected to pass their helmets through the grandstands and collect money. The money will be used to make and ship holiday care packages to soldiers.

There were also drawings for prizes for each $5 donation racing fans gave to the cause. Prizes included an overnight stay at the Cobblestone Inn in Vinton, among others.

“Over $2,000 was raised in one night, which just goes to show how generous the racing community is,” said Dan Engledow.

The driver who collected the most won $100 for his efforts. The $100 prize was provided by the Dana Benning family. Dana is the Benton County Speedway track manager.

Racer Curtis Roster raised the most money, but he donated his $100 prize back to the organization. Iowa’s Bravest raised a total of $2,207.60 Sunday night in Vinton.
