You may see an elementary student near you going to school looking different than usual this week. That's because the students are celebrating a combination of Character Counts Week, Red Ribbon Week and Bullying Prevention Month with a daily activity.

After Stomp Out Bullying Day on Monday, when Tilford and Shellsburg students wore boots or yellow, Tuesday's theme was "Crazy Hair Day."

"The purpose of Crazy Hair Day is to teach students to be themselves," said guidance counselor Sharla Wrage.

On Wednesday, the theme will be Black Out Bullying, as students are invited to wear black. Thursday is Hats off to Honesty Day.

Wrage said there are a variety of themes and lessons the students are learning this week concerning bullying, which include:

Learn to accept others and their "craziness;' never tease someone because they are "different."

Team up: If you see a student being bullied, invite them to come with you to a safer situation.

Speak up: Tell a student who is bullying others to stop.

"We also teach students to first stand up for themselves," said Wrage. "If the bullying continues, then they should contact an adult; then it's up to the adult to take action."
