Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics is concerned about making sure those eligible for Medicare get all the help they can to navigate the complexities of receiving Medicare benefits.  That’s why VGH has invited SHIIP, (Senior Health Insurance Information Program) to locate in the building formerly occupied by Home Health.

SHIIP is a program administered by the state of Iowa.  A SHIIP volunteer will be available to assist seniors during the October 15th to December 7th Medicare Open Enrollment period.  There is no cost for the service and volunteers are trained to provide unbiased, independent advice on everything ranging from Medicare Part D programs to questions about Medicare, Medicare supplement insurance, long term care insurance, and claims filings.  Examples of services SHIIP provides include sorting, organizing and explaining health claims, explaining Medicare options, and comparing prescription drug plans.

The local SHIIP office will be located at 309 1st Avenue; the former VGH Home Health office located just west of the courthouse.  Seniors can call the local number 472-4091 to schedule appointments. Though callers will initially be leaving a voicemail so the local SHIIP volunteer can call them back, VGH recommends making appointments well in advance to avoid any last minute rush. Appointments in Vinton will available starting today.
