Although it was built 140 years ago, the historic Upper Stone one-room school house between Vinton and Shellsburg is still in good condition.

Owner Russ Glime says he hopes to see it become a local museum someday.

A blog about historic school houses recently featured Upper Stone. See that blog, with more detailed history from Glime, HERE.

DH January 5, 2015, 3:27 pm Just to the east of this old school is the Lower Stone schoolhouse. My parents lived in it for a short time. Not sure who bought it now but it is in great shape. I live just a mile road to the north of it. Love these old historical buildings!
AM January 5, 2015, 9:36 pm Don Steffenson is the owner of the lower stone schoolhouse. He uses it for a wood working shop. The building is in excellent shape.
