On December 2, 2014 at approximately 5:56 a.m. a vehicle was observed speeding in excess of 100 mph in a 55 zone in the 1200 block of 73rd St (Highway 30)going east. The vehicle continued east to 15th Avenue going north through Keystone. The vehicle continued on gravel roads where it left the roadway at a “T” intersection at 69th St. and went into a chisel plowed cornfield. The vehicle continued through the field to a water way where the vehicle came to a stop after crashing into a creek bed. Two passengers, Jacob Howard Straw age 32 from Winthrop and Mykala Lynn Glaspie age 24 from Waterloo were transported by Blairstown ambulance and North Benton Ambulance from Vinton to Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton for their injuries. A third person fled the scene.
Scott Francis Kempker age 43 or Mt. Pleasant who was the alleged driver was later located in Van Horne. Kempker was treated and released from Virginia Gay Hospital and then taken to Benton County Jail on charges of Interference with official acts and several traffic violations with additional charges pending. Kempker was released in Benton County and transferred to Hardin County Jail on a warrant of Violation of Probation with a $10,000 cash bond. Glaspie who was a back seat passenger in the vehicle was transported to Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton and then transferred to Covenant in Waterloo before being transported to University Hospitals in Iowa City. Van Horne Fire and First Responders assisted at the scene. Investigation is continuing by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office
