The Vinton City Council will hold its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, but the crowd at the 6:30 p.m. Public Safety Committee meeting may be larger.

During last month's council meeting, resident Mark Christy asked the council to consider placing a stop sign at the intersection of 9th Avenue and 10th Street (south of the railroad tracks and west of Evergreen Cemetery).

The concern is not the number of cars, but the number of young pedestrians that live and play in the area.

Vinton Police Chief Jeff Tilson has recommended against the stop sign, saying traffic numbers do not justify it.

But some other area residents disagree.

"There are a lot of kids out here," said one man as he drove past the intersection recently. "We need a stop sign here." The Public Safety Committee includes City Council members Ron Elwick, Lisa Vermedahl and David Redlinger.
