In late June eleven Boy Scouts and two adults from Vintons Troop 47 spent a week at the Howard H Cherry Scout Reservation in north-east Linn County. These Scouts reconnected with old friends and made new friends. They played games, went swimming, sang songs, shot archery and performed skits in the evening campfire program.
Of course, they also learned some new skills - in the form of merit badges - such as "soil and water conservation", "climbing", "space exploration", "shotgun shooting", "life saving" and "indian lore". Two of these eleven Scouts spent an additional week working at camp as a Councilor In Training. In this role they help camp Councilors (older Scouts) make sure that everyone is safe and has fun. Their jobs include everything from flag ceremonies and camp-wide games to washing dishes and taking out the trash.
One additional Troop 47 Scout is spending the entire summer working as a camp Councilor. Each week he confidently teaches a new group of Scouts merit badge skills that he himself learned at camp just a couple of years ago. Along the way, all of these Scouts learn the value of teamwork and service to others. Skills that will serve them well for the rest of their lives. Troop 47 meets every Monday night at 7:30PM at the Izaak Walton League on Highway 150 north of Vinton.
