Continuing a tradition that started with the Vikettes basketball team a few years ago, the Vinton-Shellsburg football team held its Pink Night on the first Friday of Breast Cancer Month.

Approximately 160 V-S students and fans purchased pink t-shirts, with the proceeds going toward the Virginia Gay Hospital mammography service. Several breast cancer survivors received recognition before the game, and a few joined the Viking captains for the coin toss.

Many Vikings wore pink socks or shoelaces; a few wore pink shirts under their black jerseys. A couple players even used pink mouth guards. The referees, too, wore pink wrist bands and used pink whistles.

Survivors also wore new black and pink arm bands to celebrate their victory over the disease.

The event raised $461 to provide mammography services for area women who cannot afford them.
