Bond for Raul Salazar, Jr, remained at $500,000 after a hearing in his 3-count vehicular homicide case earlier this month.

Salazar, 39, of Bushland, Texas, is accused of driving drunk, running a stop sign and causing a collision that killed three people in August.

The victims were Valerie Ann Schneiders, 22; Jason C. Bessert, 24; and Jason’s daughter, Hailey R. Bessert, age 3, all of Cedar Rapids. Schneiders and Bessert were dating at the time of the accident, and were returning to Cedar Rapidsfrom her hometown of Traer.

The court cited Salazar’s third visit to his probation officer, where he arrived with the smell of alcohol on his breath and later tests revealed him to be legally intoxicated.

Accomplice pleads not guilty to impeding apprehension

Authorities allege that after the fatal accident, Salazar and a passenger, Rafael Moreno, 29, of San Fernando, Calif., were in a field trying to hide containers of beer. Moreno has pleaded not guilty to the charge of preventing apprehension. His trial is set for Nov. 12.

Three wrongful death suits filed

The parents of the three victims have filed three separate wrongful death suits against Salazar, seeking payment for damages and expenses related to the accident, as well as emotional suffering and loss of companionship.
