Bella the dog is safe, rescued Tuesday afternoon by a neighbor and a passer-by.

That is one of the few bright spots that Charley and Abby Cronk will remember from that day.

The Vinton Fire Department was sent to their house in the 800 block of First Avenue shortly at around 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Neighbors called 911 after seeing and smelling smoke coming from the house, particularly the kitchen area.

Next door neighbor Beth Owens dialed 911 while she and daughter Meghan looked in the yard for Bella, the small dog that lives with the Cronks.

"We knew she was in the house because we didn't see her in the yard," said Beth.

A Vinton-Shellsburg Class of 2011 classmate of Meghan, Sean Dulin, happened to be walking by at the time. He and Meghan grabbed a fire extinguisher, opened the back door, sprayed the fire and rescued the dog from its kennel.

The Cronks were both at work at the time; nobody else was in the house.

The fire apparently began with an electrical problem in the wall near the kitchen appliances. While smoke had spread throughout the house, the flames were contained to part of the kitchen. Firemen removed part of the wall and some appliances from the kitchen.

The Vinton Police Department and North Benton Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.

The house belongs to my niece and her husband. So sad ... their first home. How wonderful of the neighbor stepping in and rescueing Bella and neighbor's watching out for neighbors and making the call to insure saving the kids' home. Thank you
