I love history and especially Vinton history. One of Vinton Today's readers a former resident of Vinton who loves to dig into the history of this little town as well. Upon seeing the news about the fire this weekend, he sent this little tidbit in about the history of the building that caught on fire. City Council & Hobarts debate the future of Braille School Developer's Agreement

At a work session held with the Vinton City Council with Jim and Jimmy Hobart the representatives of Vinton Braille School, LLC and Hobart Historical Restoration (HHR) PM, LLC (Jointly referred to as "Hobart") the meeting opened with Tami Stark-Mahood leading the meeting. On the agenda was to discuss the Developer's Agreement (DA) which Hobarts hold for the former Braille School property.

Second family in need of assistance following fire

The Vinton Fire Department received the call late Sunday night to put out a fire in the apartments located on K Ave. between Tootsie's and Beast and Bird on Highway 218.The Vinton Fire Department was on the scene until about 2:30 a.m. The structure housed two apartments, laundry facility and office, The structure is a total loss. At this time there is no known cause for the fire.

Celebrate Christmas and New Year's Safely

It's hard to have a happy holiday if you're arrested for drunk driving. The Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with law enforcement across Iowa to urge drivers to designate before you celebrate. Through January 1, 2025, drivers will see officers supporting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's high visibility enforcement campaign to spread the message about the dangers of impaired driving.

Kuper home destroyed, Community rallying to show support

A fire destroyed the home of Janet Kuper and her daughter Grace last night. At approximately 10:22 p.m. the Vinton Fire Department received the call. The apartment is located on K Ave. between Tootsie's and Beast and Bird on Highway 218. The Kuper Relief Fund has been set up at Farmers Bank to help the family.. If you would like to donate to the fund, you can simply pull up at the drive up and drop off a donation for the family.

Vinton Lions Club Donates $2,195 to Honor Flights of Eastern Iowa

The Honor Flights of Eastern Iowa organization, which first began flying veterans to Washington, D.C. in 2009, is preparing for its 54th flight on April 29, 2025. This flight continues the group's mission of honoring veterans by providing them with an unforgettable experience to visit memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice.In support of this mission, the Vinton Lions Club presented a check for $2,195 to Honor Flights of Eastern Iowa.

Stein Family in need of Assistance

17-year-old Mackenzy, was diagnosed at age 8 with Chiari Malformation which is a condition where the brain tissue at the base of the skull pushes into the spinal canal, putting pressure on the brain and spinal cord. Mackenzy said that the oral pain meds to help manage her headaches and the pain in her head and neck, have stopped working. She has been in and out of ERs for pain management.

Martin Gardner Architecture Present Booster Club Check

At the recent VS School Board meeting, representatives from Martin Gardner Architecture presented a check for $1,000 donation to the Vinton-Shellsburg school district to support student activities.Receive Visitors / Public CommentsThere were no public comments. Administrator & Director Reports1. Wesley United Methodist Church Food Pantry is set for this Saturday

The Wesley United Methodist Church will have their food pantry available on Saturday, December 21 from 9-10:30 a.m.The church is located at 516 2nd Ave. right next to the library. Be sure to bring boxes and bags for your goodies!
