Virginia Gay Hospital is pleased to announce the addition of Brendan Leiran, PA-C, as an Emergency Room/Hospitalist. He received a master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies from St. Ambrose University and has experience as a physician assistant simultaneously working in both Urgent Care for Mercycare in Cedar Rapids and orthopedics/sports medicine at Physicians' Clinic of Iowa. He joins Wes Lyons, Tammy Madsen, Jill Reese, and Matt Wilden as a member of the emergency medical care team caring for patients treated in the emergency department and those admitted to the hospital for treatment or observation.

Brendan is originally from the small town of Waukon in northeast Iowa, population 3,500. He was a four-sport high school athlete and played football while in college at Coe in Cedar Rapids. "I saw my fair share of athletic trainers and physical therapists. Those interactions initiated my desire to go into the medical field," he comments.

"I always hoped to serve a small, tightly knit community like the one I grew up in. As a PA student, I completed a rotation with Dr. Meeker and became familiar with Virginia Gay Hospital and some of the providers at the hospital and clinic in Vinton. It was a great experience, so I was pleased to learn of an opportunity here and felt it would be a perfect fit."

"I strive to practice with evidence-based and patient-specific care. I allow the patient to be a part of their care and help make medical decisions that work best for them whenever possible."

Practicing evidence-based medicine encourages discussion between patients and healthcare providers. Patients and providers work together to determine the best course of action. Patients are given the opportunity to share their values and preferences while participating in decision-making. The benefit of this approach is that providers listen to patient's concerns and utilize that information in determining the best treatment plan.

Brendan's family includes his wife, Alicia, daughter Sloane, and a 6-year-old golden retriever. "My wife and I met at Coe College during our sophomore year. We've been married since June 2018. Our beautiful baby girl is eight-months-old and crawling all over the place." Brendan's parents still reside in Waukon, and he has an older brother, sister, and a younger sister.

Brendan lists sports and working out as his hobbies. He enjoys golf, slow-pitch softball, basketball, and downhill skiing. "I am a huge Green Bay Packers fan. And I also like the Hawkeyes."
