The child may not remember, but the body remembers.

Benton-Iowa Community Partnership for Protecting Children is pleased to announce Patti (Wachtendorf) Lund, recently retired Iowa State Penitentiary warden, will be giving a talk on Thursday, February 13, 2020, at Blairstown Community Center, 305 Locust Street NW. The program will begin with a showing of the 60-minute documentary RESILIENCE: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope. The event commences at 8:30 am and finishes at noon.

Ms. Lund was warden of the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women and also the first female warden of Iowa State Men's Penitentiary. Ms. Lund will speak on the domino effect of experiences that bring people to prison, innovative programming she introduced as Warden, and what is needed to reduce recidivism.

This training will also include a showing of the documentary RESILIENCE, a one-hour film that delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the movement to treat and prevent toxic stress. Extreme stress in childhood can alter brain development and have lifelong effects on health and behavior including an increased risk for depression, substance abuse, poor academic achievement, and even early death.

But as the documentary RESILIENCE reveals, there is a way to fight back. Experts and practitioners profiled in the film are proving what is predictable is preventable. Trailblazers in healthcare, education, and social welfare are using cutting-edge science and field-tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress and the domino effect Ms. Lund observed throughout her life's work in the prison system.

"The sad thing is that a lot of our students think that what they are going through is normal. This is their normal. If no one has given them a way to think otherwise, I think that's why the cycle just keeps going and going and going," Cynthia Manifold, a kindergarten teacher at Strong Elementary School in New Haven, Connecticut, said following a viewing of RESILENCE.
