The Iowa House and Senate passed a bill to the Governor's desk in the early hours on Thursday morning according to State Representative Tom Gerhold. The bill prohibits K-12 schools from mandating masks. It also prevents cities and counties from mandating masks in businesses.
This bill was signed and is in effect immediately rather than the usual July 1 implementation date as is normal practice, the Governor requested this change.
"The state of Iowa is putting parents back in control of their child's education and taking greater steps to protect the rights of all Iowans to make their own health care decisions," Reynolds said in a statement. "I am proud to be a governor of a state that values personal responsibility and individual liberties. I want to thank the Iowa Legislature for their quick work in bringing this bill to my desk so that it can be signed into law."
The decision on whether masks should be worn can now be made by the parents.
