Free Meals Q&A

* How are students getting free meals?

* The USDA extended a waiver that allows all children to eat for free during the COVID shutdowns that began in March 2020. Food service directors across the state filled out many applications for this program

* D o teachers/support staffs get free meals?

* No, our department is a child's nutrition program so the waiver only covers children's meals. Adult meals are $4.00

* What about the money already on student accounts?

* The money stays on their account. At this time the waiver is only extended until December 31, 2020*. Beginning January 1, 2021 all families will go back to being charged based on their free/reduced/paid status.

* All extra purchases like; Snack, Milk, A La Carte, & Extras will still be available to students, but must be purchased through the families meal account. Current lunch status benefits will not apply to any extras and students must have a positive balance topurchase them.

* If your student has a negative balance, please continue to add money to your student's account until the balance becomes even or positive.

USDA to Temporarily Provide Free Breakfast and Lunch for All Vinton-Shellsburg Students

Starting September 21st, Vinton-Shellsburg will be participating in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) that the USDA recently extended. This program is scheduled to run until December 31st, 2020 or until funds run out.

At this point, no one knows when this funding may run out, so like everything related to COVID, it will be a fluid process and we will notify families as soon as possible of any changes.

For the time being, this means:

* All enrolled Vinton-Shellsburg Students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch.* You do not have to do anything

I am encouraging all families to take advantage and participate in breakfast and lunch this fall. Meals will be provided at no cost to the family. This gives every family the chance to feel a sense of financial relief while also having the security of their student(s) being fed.

* We will serve students attending on-site at allbuildings.

* Virtual Learners will have access to pick up meals, ata designated building. Contact: Karen Ackman, if you have any questions or concerns 319-436-5848, karen.ackman@vscsd.org

* When funds run out, we will go back to the National School Breakfast and School Lunch Programs and students will be charged according to their eligibility. For now, the free meals will be the only option for school lunch other than students bringing their own lunch from home.

Please contact: Karen Ackman, if you have any questions or concerns with your student(s) meal account.

A huge thank you to our wonderful students and families!
