Melissa Schwan to fill Vinton City Clerk position
The Vinton City Council held a work session before the regular council meeting a little more than a week ago. Three city officials have been interviewing candidates for the new City Clerk position. There was a total of 8 applicants for the position, Interviews were held with Chris Ward the City Administrator, Ted Paxton the Vinton Police Chief, and Tom Richtemier General Manager of the Vinton Municipal Electric Utilities all three bringing a different perspective to what is needed in the City Clerk position. The interviewers narrowed the search down to three possible candidates. Of the three remaining candidates, all three held Master's Degrees, and one held a Doctorate and all are more than qualified to do the job the interviewers reported to the council. It was felt that all the candidates had strong financial abilities, and technical skills, but through the interviews, the feeling was that one candidate stood out above the others in the skills that would be needed to manage the various tasks.
The salary is split between the City and the Electric Utilities. The two representatives of each branch will decide the final salary offer to present to the council.
The council was notified at a special meeting of the applicant.
Vinton Unlimited's Director, Melissa Schwan has been offered and accepted the position. After nearly 6 years in her current position, she's been involved in several community projects, one being the purchase and transfer of the former Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School.
"I've loved my time working with the businesses, organizing events and developing relationships but it's time for a new adventure. I've seen many projects take off in the last couple of years and I'm thrilled to be able to see those projects finish in the next year to two - just in a different role," said Schwan.
When you stop at City Hall to drop off the electric bill, you won't see a new face but a familiar face.
Schwan will begin her official duties as the City Clerk On October 5th.
