Today, we continue our series of candidate profiles with Lorin Potter, one of the candidates for Benton County Supervisor. As with all other candidates, we present the information in his own words.
I am asking for your support and vote in the Democratic Primary election on June 7 and your vote in the general election on November 8 for Benton County Supervisor, District 3.
As Supervisor and member of Benton Development Group, I will:
- Continue working to create manufacturing jobs and small business
- Protect farms and waterways
- Improve education from Pre-K through High School and work to provide affordable Trade school, Union training and University education
- Investigate money savings from converting courthouse and Sheriff station to Wind and solar power
- Continue pressure on Iowa DOT to improve HWY 30 to 4 lanes through Benton County for farm to market transport of crops
Experience:
- 6 years on Luzerne City Council
- 4 years Luzerne Mayor Pro-Tem
- Owner of a profitable business in Cedar Rapids for 10 years
- Former member of Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce
- Currently a member of the Benton Development Group (BDG) and Farm Bureau
- US Navy Veteran
I met my wife, Fran, of 48 years on Midway Island just after my time in the Navy. Our youngest daughter, Cindy, lives in Northern California. Ruth, our eldest daughter, works at the U of I and lives in Iowa City with her husband and our two amazing grandsons.
I am a U.S. Navy veteran, a retired owner of two small businesses in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids and was an active member of Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce.
Platform
I will visit our county’s roads and bridges to know where problems might be arising, and I will strive to attend every city’s council meeting at least once a year to discuss issues with the Mayor and City Council. My other goals for office include:
- Continue working with Benton Development Group to create manufacturing jobs and grow small businesses.
- Protect farms, farmland and waterways.
- Improve education from Pre-K through High School and provide affordable Trade Schools, Union Training and Universities (part of this is building true, affordable High Speed Internet to all our rural school children, farmers and industry).
- Investigate cost savings of converting Court House and Sheriff’s office to wind and solar power, and replacing existing light bulbs with LED bulbs.
- Investigate cost savings of planting native Iowa wildflowers on Highways 30 and 218. (In Texas, this saves a small amount of road maintenance costs and brings in tourists who spend money in local gas stations, restaurants and stores).
- Continue pressure on the State to improve Highway 30 in Benton County to four lanes.
As Supervisor, I will always respond to phone calls, emails and Facebook requests. I feel it’s very important to be responsive. If you have any questions or want to say hello, please feel free to Email me!
