Coming soon to a Harvest Potluck near you: “Good Morning Vietnam—2015”
The program for the Center Point Historical Society’s annual community supper will be a slide show by local retired businessman and Vietnam War vet Jon Sholes. He’ll show slides of the trip he and his wife Donna took to Vietnam and Cambodia in August.
The Harvest Potluck is Thursday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m. at the Center Point dentist office basement (which is handicap accessible.) The community is invited to the free event. A covered dish is appreciated but not required. Beverage and table service are provided.
The program will begin at about 7 p.m.
Jon served in the infantry in the Vietnam War in 1970-71. The title of his presentation is from a 1987 movie based on irreverent U.S. Armed Forces Radio DJ Adrian Cronauer, popular with the troops and infuriating to the Vietnam brass.
“I wanted to go to Vietnam because Donna had never been in Asia; I knew it was a pretty country; and I was always impressed with the people when I was there,” Jon said.
“It was an opportunity to see another culture. The people were wonderful,” he said. “Vietnam is a communist country. But the thing is Vietnam is coming out of the communist dark ages. They’re poised to become an economic force and they certainly deserve some prosperity and success.”
Besides planning the Harvest Potluck at its September meeting, the Historical Society set its theme for 2016-17. The group’s activities and Museum displays will feature “The Fifties and Sixties.”
