Events and Activities : 4-H Film Festival

A film showcase for youth

Participants create and submit a 1 to 5 minute film to be evaluated. The top three films in each category will be screened at the Iowa 4-H Film Festival event. Judges select winners for each category award and Best of Festival award, and Festival audience members will vote for the People’s Choice award.

When?

August 13, 2010 from 7 - 9p.m.

Where?

4-H Exhibits Building, Iowa State fairgrounds, Des Moines, Iowa (Map)

Who can participate?

Production teams composed of youth who completed 5th – 12th grades in the 2009-2010 school year. At least one member of the team must be a 4-H member (it's easy to join 4-H!)

Production team:

Between 1 and 10 members, at least one of which must be a 4-H member (Join 4-H!). All awards will be shared among production team members. For more detailed festival and submission guidelines click here.

Category descriptions:

• Educate - Provide information or training on a specific topic
• Inspire - Raise awareness about an important issue or call viewers to action
• Just 4 fun - Videos intended to entertain.

How to register? Entry forms due June 14, 2010.

Every production team must fill out the online registration form or mail in the paper registration form by the June 14th deadline to participate.

After registering:

Your production team will receive a packet in the mail containing:

• The following props, which are yours to keep and use in your video (optional)
  • "it starts with Extension" pin
  • Iowa 4-H T-shirt
  • Iowa 4-H frisbee
• Forms you will need to fill out and send in with your submission (also listed on the right side of this webpage)

Submitting your film: Submissions due July 26

Films must follow the submission guidelines and must be in the mail by July 26th to be evaluated and included in the festival.

The Festival

Every production team who submits a film for the festival will receive tickets to the Iowa State Fair on August 13th! The Festival itself starts at 7:00 p.m. Production teams and Fair goers will gather in the 4-H building on the Iowa State fairgrounds to watch the top three films in each category on the jumbo screen! Everyone will get a chance to vote for his or her favorite film to win the People’s Choice award. When the showcase is over, winning production teams will be called up on stage to receive their prizes and recognition! For more details see the submission guidelines.

• Filmmaking workshop
• Production team and video featured in Iowa media
• $100 cash award (split among team members)

People’s Choice

• Filmmaking workshop
• Production team and video featured in Iowa media

Best of Festival

• iPad (or gift certificate to Apple Store of equivalent amount)
