Scientific studies aren't in, but it looks like we may be forgetting how to potluck.

The Friends of the Library and Historical Society at Center Point are keeping the casseroles coming by hosting the annual community Harvest Potluck Thursday, Oct. 5, at 6 p.m. in the Library community room.

At 7 Kathy Wilson, Marion historian, will give a free slide presentation on "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," in conjunction with Banned Book Week.

In preparation, here's a peek at potluck protocol. For a potluck, each guest contributes food to the mutual meal; generally known as "bring a covered dish." In the best circles, this does not mean a bag of potato chips (although chips can be forgiven in an emergency.) It means main-dishy dishes like fried chicken, meat loaf, casseroles, or something hearty in a slow cooker.

Potluck purists say "bring a covered dish" means a main dish AND a side or dessert. If you're a competitive cook, you bring pie.

That's about it about potlucking. Basically:

1. Don't come empty-handed (unless you're contributing in some other significant way.)

2. Do enjoy good home-cooking in good company.

Oh, and for the Friends/Historical Society potluck, you don't need to bring table service or drinks. They're provided.
