Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” is controversial – Palace patrons either can’t wait to see it or would rather have a tooth pulled. This film is rated PG and is artistically bright and colorful, but please be warned – the dark, confusing undertones (or are those blatant overtones?) present in the classic story, and capitalized upon by Burton in the movie, may be psychologically damaging to you and your impressionable youth. But it sure looks like an Edward Scissorhands-Jack Sparrow-Willy Wonka-with-a-bit-of-Sweeney Todd-to-keep-it-interesting fun time to me! “Alice” plays the Palace on Friday, April 9 through Thursday, April 15 at 7 p.m. nightly and Saturday, April 10 and Monday, April 12 at 2 p.m. It runs 108 minutes. No – we are not able to show this movie in 3-D, but the Palace staff and trustees are actively encouraging you to make a donation to our Digital Cinema Fund, which will not only allow us to bring you 3-D films, but alternative programming as well. Wouldn’t you have LOVED to watch that UNI basketball game on the big screen? Many of your friends and neighbors have already given – check out the proof on the lobby walls at the theatre! Help your kids make a difference to their local, volunteer-run, $2 theatre by letting them purchase a donation card, sign their own name, hang it on the wall and make a difference for just one dollar! Every dollar counts – throw your concessions change in the donation jar, buy a card for $1, $5 or $25 at the box office, or write us a check for whatever you can afford. Remember, your donations will allow us to bring in a state of the art digital cinema system yet this summer, AND KEEP OUR ADMISSION COST JUST $2 ($3 for 3-D)! Local businesses – do you realize that more than 50% of Palace patrons come from outside of Vinton? Your donations keep the Palace Theatre alive and help maintain a healthy, vibrant downtown. Business contributions will also provide you with advertising all year long, as we will be creating a preshow video commercial thanking our donors that will run before each movie at 7 p.m. Come enjoy “Alice in Wonderland” with Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Crispin Glover, and make your donation to improve and maintain Vinton’s greatest cultural asset.
