Events and Activities : BC Above the Influence Coalition February Meeting Minutes

Town Hall- March 24, 2011 @ VSHS Commons 5-7pm

Our town hall this year will feature various booths about substances and issues that affect the youth of Benton County. The event will be held in conjunction with parent-teacher conferences and snacks will be provided.

TIPS Training- late April/early May 2011

Our coalition will be hosting a training for bar owners/employees to certify in TIPS (Training for Intervention ProcedureS), which provides education on recognizing fake IDs, refusing service, creating policies, etc. The training, in addition to developing knowledge, will also lower insurance rates slightly for bars that become certified.

Billboard- April 2011

Our coalition is sponsoring a billboard for prom! We have the first, north facing billboard on 218 (Virginia Gay’s now). Discussion about the billboard included making sure that it includes bright colors and humor.

Middle School Mixer- May 7th or 14th was suggested as a possible day for a middle school mixer event, focusing on education for parents and a street marketing event for middle school students, hosted by JEL/SADD members.

Friday Folder Handout- Potential handout for Friday Folders at the middle school. Please let me know what you think! If you like this, our plan will be to send it out near the beginning of April for Alcohol Awareness Month.

Drug Free Communities Grant- The coalition voted at this meeting to create a proposal for a Drug Free Communities Grant using Vinton-Shellsburg Schools as the fiscal agent. A committee was formed and has worked hard to complete this task on VERY short notice (THANK YOU!). Soon you will see the full application, including a proposed budget. Please take a few minutes to read through it and send us your thoughts!
