The Blue Creek Springtime Monarches are sponsoring a Jake's Day training event to help youngsters age 17 and under to learn to safely use archery and firearms. Registration for the event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Red Cedar Izaak Walton site north of Vinton. Activities and lessons will continue until 3-3:30 p.m. "We encourage the parents to attend with them but it is not mandatory that they stay for the day," says member Randy Scheel. "Kids will be given safety instruction first. Then they will have the opportunity to shoot .22's on the rifle range, clay targets with shotguns, bow and arrows, and listen/learn game calling techniques. Lunch is provided at no charge. We have had many kids over the years shoot their first rifle, shotgun or bow at this event. And there will be prizes given away at the end of the event."
