The Benton County Historical Society presents “Lincoln, Railroads and the Civil War” Saturday May 2 at 2 p.m. at the Vinton Railroad Depot Museum 612 Second Avenue, Vinton.
In April 1865, the long Civil War was finally over and then the impossible happened; President Lincoln was assassinated. One of the many legacies that President Lincoln left behind was establishment of a system of railroads played a vital role during the Civil War and the building of the first transcontinental railroad.
Entire military units, guns, ammunition, food and supplies moved by rail. The first railroad hospital cars carried wounded Union soldiers to safe medical care. Winning the war often meant blowing up rail lines and bridges. A band of Union soldiers even stole a Confederate train, and the "Great Locomotive Chase" was on!
Relive the era through classic old photos and commentary by Phil Borleske, local rail enthusiast. Your ticket to a depot seat is a $10 donation for depot upkeep. All aboard! Please RSVP by calling 319-472-3918.
