The Presbyterian Church of Vinton will celebrate the beginning of its program year with a variety of events this coming Sunday, Sept. 14.
Rally Day, or Rally Sunday, is the traditional name for the beginning of the church program year as people return from their summer schedules. While the church remains active during summer months, programming, events, and activities are more frequent during the school calendar year. Rally day signifies this shift between the seasons as the church moves from summer to fall programming.
In worship, the Presbyterian Church’s Adult Choral Choir will be singing and new members will be joining church membership during worship. Worship will be led by the Rev. Jessica Crane-Munoz, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Children of all ages are welcome in worship, and there is also staffed nursery care available for young children.
Highlighting the event is a Salsa Contest to accompany a Taco and Potato Bar luncheon, which will be held after worship at approximately 11:30 a.m. Prizes will be given out to winners of the contest.
“It is going to be a great day. There’s something going on for everyone to enjoy, and this is a great way to begin our fall activities. For visitors, it is a way for people to get a taste of what our congregation offers to people across the age and interest spectrum,” said Pastor Jessica Crane-Munoz. “I am excited about the salsa contest. It’s something new and different for our congregation and it will be a lot of fun.”
Sunday school classes and the Confirmation class begin with a breakfast provided by the Christian Education committee of the church. Sunday school classes this year are for ages pre-school through Adult, and the Confirmation class is for seventh and eighth graders. All classes begin at 9 a.m.
Events wrap-up Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., as the Presbyterian Church’s Junior High Youth Group will be sponsoring a movie event, showing the uplifting film, “Soul Surfer” in the church's Fellowship Hall. Admission is two (2) personal hygiene items such as shampoo or deodorant, or home cleaning items such as paper towels or laundry soap, and items collected will go to support two area missions: the HD Youth Center in Cedar Rapids, and the Free Products Just for You mission program led by the Presbyterian Church of Vinton. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Free popcorn will be served.
