Learn safe, research-based methods for food preservation during a workshop on Monday, July 7, 2014 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Old School Produce Company (811 D Ave, Old West School Building, Vinton). The program is offered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach of Benton County in partnership with Old School Produce Company. Rachel Wall, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach nutrition and health specialist will lead the workshop.
To register, call Rachel Wall at (319)768-8777 or e-mail wallr@iastate.edu. The registration deadline is June 30, 2014. Workshop is $5. Please bring cash to workshop.
The workshop covers the basics in canning, freezing, and dehydrating. Participants will also be able to practice their knife skills and make fresh salsa to take home. Pressure canner lid testing will also be available for dial-gauge pressure canners. All-American and Burpee models cannot be tested.
“We want Iowans to gain the knowledge of safe food practices,” Rachel Wall said. “We also want them to be able to identify safe recipes that are tested, as well as understand that there is a risk to food preservation. We want them to know the steps to avoid those risks.”
