Vinton, Iowa – Steve Murty is utilizing annual forages to produce both summer pasture and to re-establish tall grasses into a permanent pasture. Murty is sharing his experiences as a part of a Leopold Center demonstration project with a field day on July 28.

The field day will begin at 6:30 PM with a demonstration on grazing sorghum/sudangrass. The pasture is located ¼ mile west of 1971 170th St, west of Traer. The sorghum/sudangrass was seeded in early June and should be ready to start grazing by mid-July. In addition to the sorghum/sudangrass, he will also have examples of other summer annuals such as pearl millet, forage sorghum and teff grass. Other topics for discussion include rotational grazing, pasture management, and pasture subdivision.

This event is co-sponsored by ISU Beef Center and Land’O’Lakes Forage First. A light dinner will be provided following the field day.

For more information on the field day, contact Iowa State Extension beef specialist Denise Schwab at 319-472-4739 or dschwab@iastate.edu.
