Community members looking to strengthen their leadership and collaboration skills in Iowa’s local food system are invited to take part in Local Food Leader 101, a two-day certification workshop hosted by the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Farm, Food and Enterprise Development Program, Dec. 11–12, 2025, in Ames.
Local Food Leader 101 is for anyone working or volunteering in local food initiatives, such as farmers market managers, nonprofit leaders, community organizers and local government staff. The certification program is designed to help participants build the knowledge and confidence needed to make a meaningful impact in their communities through the development of successful food systems.
“This training gives people the tools to turn ideas into action,” said Krista Smith, extension farm to early care and education coordinator with ISU Extension and Outreach FFED. “Whether you’re running a food pantry, working with producers or trying to connect local food to schools, you’ll walk away with practical skills to strengthen your local network.”
Participants will explore key topics that support successful community food system development, including:
- Building a common language around food systems
- Encouraging dignity and involvement in local food work
- Effective facilitation and leadership
- Creating practical plans of work
- Evaluating projects and programs
- Professional growth and development
The in-person winter cohort will be held at the Economic Development Core Facility in Ames and includes opportunities for networking and hands-on learning:
- Thursday, Dec. 11: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. (light breakfast and lunch included)
- Friday, Dec. 12: 9 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. (light breakfast included)
Participants who complete the course will earn a certificate of completion in Local Food Leader 101 and become eligible to continue into Local Food Leader 201.
The registration cost is $250, which includes course materials and meals during the workshop. Space is limited, and registration closes Dec. 1.
