I recently read 'So Far Gone' by Jess Walter. This book tells the story of Rhys Kinnick, a man so tired of the state of the nation that he goes off-grid. No cell phone, no indoor plumbing, no neighbors, no contact with his family. He begins questioning his life choices when his young grandchildren knock on the door. He doesn't recognize them and mistakenly assumes they're selling something. Instead their mother has pulled her own disappearing act. The story continues from there as the three embark on an unforgettable search for Rhys' daughter. I enjoyed this story deeply. It ultimately asks the question, when you've given up on the world, what would it take to make you keep fighting for what truly matters?
Ann Patchett has this to say about the novel: "I loved this book, and marveled at how Jess Walter managed to build such a warm, funny, loving novel out of so many horrible parts. It's an American original."
'So Far Gone' currently has 3.99/5 stars on goodreads.com.
Happy reading,
Kelly
