Et cetera : AmeriCorps NCCC Class 19 Corps Member Spotlight: Jasmine Ulrich

Jasmine Ulrich, from Waupaca, Wis., is a member of Oak 4 in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start her 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Oak 4 is made up of nine people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

“(NCCC) will get me further in life,” Jasmine said when explaining why she joined NCCC. She was very excited to start this program and make a positive change in her life.

Jasmine brings several skills with her to NCCC, which help her be successful throughout her term with the program. She is honest, and is very good at working together with others.

Prior to joining NCCC, Jasmine was studying for her diploma. She attended Waupaca High School and the Wisconsin National Guard ChalleNGe Academy. After finishing the program, she hopes to go to college to study child care.

Jasmine has a unique experience from her involvement with ChalleNGe Academy. “They've taught me a lot more then I knew before,” Jasmine said. There, she learned “honesty, cleaning, and working with others,” among many other useful life skills.

Oak 4’s current project runs from May 2 to June 25 with the Mississippi River Project in Thompson, Ill. and various other locations along the river.The team is assisting in the rehabilitation and upkeep of recreation area amenities such as shower buildings, campsites, water systems, and natural features. Oak 4 is assisting with any possible flood cleanup detail which includes debris removal, cleaning and sanitizing amenities, and re-establishing access to remote areas. They are also providing assistance to natural resource management projects such as tree planting, invasive species removal, trail maintenance, and interpretive display upkeep and maintenance on 55,000 acres of forested land.
