Maple One arrived in Prairie du Chien, Wis. on July 16 to begin their term as camp counselors at the Wisconsin Badger Camp (WBC). WBC has been in existence for nearly 50 years, and serves campers with physical and mental disabilities. Each team member works in a group with one other WBC counselor and three to four campers. Campers range from age three to eighty five. The team assists each camper with dressing, feeding and other care work. Each teammate participates closely with their campers throughout the day, doing activities such as arts and crafts, recreation on the front lawn, swimming in the pool, fishing at a nearby state park, camping on the camp grounds as well as dancing and playing instruments during music. Thus far, the team has had an amazing time on their project. One highlight was the Badger Ball, a dance on the last night of each session, where campers dress to the nines and dance the night away with their counselors. Each week, the team participates in reflections where they share inspirational and memorable moments they had with their campers, such as being welcomed into their hearts or successfully having a conversation in sign language. Maple One feels so fortunate to be given the opportunity to bond closely with and greatly help some of the nicest, most genuine and fun-loving people.
