Team Maple 6 is at Saginaw YMCA Camp Timbers in West Branch, Michigan improving the camp in various ways, hosting volunteer service days, leading students at a local school to pack food packs for Kids Against Hunger and working Independent Service Projects. The team is extremely happy and excited for the impact their service work has, and will, have on Camp Timbers and the surrounding community.

At Camp Timbers Maple 6 has completed several projects including building and staining benches, assembling and weather-proofing picnic tables, removing invasive species of plants and other brush, building and marking trails throughout the campground and constructing privacy screens and shelving units for the many cabins. The team has also hosted one volunteer service day out of 2 planned so far, during the day volunteers from the YMCA in Saginaw came to Camp Timbers and assisted in projects and helped train the team on new skills in fields such as construction.

Maple 6’s sponsor organization also helped set up an opportunity for the team to volunteer at local school, St. Joesph’s. The team led students in packing over 10,000 meals for non-profit organization Kids Against Hunger. One third of the packaged meals were sent to food banks in the surrounding area, and the rest will be stored in a warehouse and be sent out for large-scale emergencies anywhere in the world.

“I thought it was great to see the community come together to provide meals for those who would otherwise go without. This event was a great reminder that together we can make a difference and eradicate hunger,” says Maple 6 member Claysen, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Outside of the project, Maple 6 has volunteered for the Ogemaw County Humane Society as an Independent Service Project. An opportunity well enjoyed by the team, they helped in maintenance and animal care for cats and dogs.

Serving the community and youth of the Great Lakes Bay Region for over 50 years, YMCA Camp Timbers strives to provide remarkable experiences, quality connections, and meaningful growth for all campers and guests.

Maple 6 will be returning back to Vinton late next week before heading out on another service project.
