The Vinton Garden Club member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., District II, and Central Region met at 11:30 am April 30, 2014 at the home of Luanna Hawkins for lunch with Anne Dake as co-hostess. After lunch Mark Pigenot, Arbor Care LLC, gave an interesting presentation on “Treatment of trees for Emerald Ash borer and other diseases”.
President Fran Stueck called the meeting to order at 12:18 p.m. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and conservation pledge. Seven members answered the roll call “Do you have any Ash trees?”
Secretary Kelly Kaut read the minutes, they were approved as read. Treasurer’s balance was given. Bills were presented by Fran Stueck for the two books for library in memory of our two members. For Nadine Wright “All New Illustrated Guide to Gardening” and for Rita Glime “Field Guide to Hostas“. Frazier Nursery for Cleveland Select Pear. Anne Dake made motion to pay bills and Sharen Stueck seconded the motion. Motion carried and report will be filed for audit.
Correspondence - Green Scene Plant sale Saturday May 10th at National Cattle Congress, Waterloo, 9:00 am to Noon.
Thank you from the family member of Rita Glime, who passed away March 31st, 2014 for Hosta book we put in library in her memory.
Committee reports - Ways and Means 31st Annual Plant and Bake Sale Friday May 16th, 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Open Class Building at the Fairgrounds. Flyers need to be put up around town and neighboring towns at least 10 days before sale. An ad in the Livewire May 7th and 14th.
Membership - need to work on getting new members.
Photography and Publicity - news put in paper and in Vinton Today.
Unfinished business - President Fran Stueck and Anne Dake chose a Cleveland Select Pear tree at Frazier Nursery to be planted in the Kiwanis park. It will be planted when weather permits. The Parks can use any tree we want to give whether it’s a shade or flowering tree.
Fran purchased books to be put in library in memory of two members Nadine Wright “All New Illustrated Guide to Gardening” and Rita Glime “Field Guide to Hostas”.
Seven members have signed up for the District II meeting May 23rd.
New business - Our scholarship winner was chosen after garden therapy at Cedar Valley Ranch April 8th. Fran will present the scholarship on awards night May 14th.
Ted and Fran Stueck cleaned off Scherbring gardens and bed at Kiwanis. Members Joyce Bratten, Cam Wood, Sharen Stueck, Anne Dake and Kelly Kaut cleaned half of the perennial bed at the Tilford outdoor classroom.
Fran passed out committees to plant planters around town. Should have them done by next meeting May 28th.
The next meeting will be May 28th touring “In the Garden” at Quasqueton. Lunch and meeting will be at Wolfeys with Fran Stueck as hostess. Please remember to RSVP.
