Center Point Friends of the Library members, at their regular meeting Feb. 6, 2014, reviewed plans for the genealogy/family history workshop they’re sponsoring this month.
“Genealogy on a Shoestring” will be taught by local genealogist Bob King and by family history writing instructor Linda Joy Schmidt of Memory Echoes in Cedar Rapids. Because the Center Point Public Library has limited space and computers the Center Point Urbana High School is helping by providing the classroom and laptops for the workshop. The class is from 10 to noon, Saturday, Feb. 22, at the new High School. Preregistration at 319-560-4259 or bobking@fmtcs.com is required. A free will donation of $5 is suggested.
Friends president Christina Lahr and treasurer Vicki Thompson reported to the group on facilitating the first meeting of the Friends-sponsored Lego Club at the Library. The club meets the third Wednesday of the month from 3:30 to 4:45 and is free. Forty kids and 15 adults came to the first meeting. Children’s Librarian Diane Coberly photographed the kids and their projects and put completed works on display.
The following have donated money or Legos for the club: Tami and Brian Benda, Donovan Bilsland, Joni Goodall, Cathey Frith, Andrew Lahr, Lori Pratt, Ann Stender, Janine Walters and anonymous.
In other business Friends briefly brainstormed ideas for the Library addition capital campaign and discussed possible Friends spring events.
Friends meets at the Library the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come join in with this Library “booster club.”
