Ilyshiaw Concepcion, from Windsor Locks, Conn., is a member of Cedar 7 in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start her 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Cedar 7 is made up of seven people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

“The experience and opportunity, in my opinion, is once in a lifetime,” Ilyshiaw said, when asked why she joined NCCC. She is also excited about the traveling aspect of the program, because she has greatly enjoyed all of the places she has been able to travel to in the past.

Ilyshiaw brings several skills with her to NCCC, which help her be successful throughout her term with the program. She is positive, reliable, happy, and has great communication skills.

Prior to joining NCCC, Ilyshiaw was working and volunteering. She graduated from Loring Job Corps Center in 2012. She also graduated from Windsor Locks High School in 2011. After finishing the program, Ilyshiaw hopes to continue her education.

Cedar 7 is currently working from July 15 to August 2 with Oelwein Parks and Recreation in Oelwein, Iowa. The team is assisting with re-placing shingles on park shelters, planting bushes and shrubs, trail maintenance, and painting shelters and playground equipment.
