Mount Mercy University celebrates Class of 2019

The student(s) listed below graduated from Mount Mercy University this May. A commencement ceremony was held Sunday, May 19, 2019, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.For over 90 years, Mount Mercy has grown in size and reputation, adapting to meet the changing educational needs of the Cedar Rapids community.

By: Courtney Kessinger and Savannah Smith On May 6th, Oak 5 traveled to Adrian, Michigan to begin their project of helping build houses with Habitat for Humanity of Lenawee County. The team has been finishing up their first house, where they laid down flooring and also put up dry wall on both the sides of walls and ceilings.

The Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy (ODCP), along with the U.S. Attorneys from the Northern and Southern Districts, announced today it is accepting applications for the State’s portion of the federal Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program. An estimated $127,228 in funding will be available to communities in the Northern U.

Kirkwood Recognizes Outstanding Students

Kirkwood Community College celebrated the top echelon of students involved in academic programs during its annual Outstanding Student Recognition program on April 19. Student nominees are selected by faculty based on exceptional academic performance, completion of at least half of their coursework toward a degree, enrollment during the current fall and/or spring terms of the award, and their qualities of character and leadership.

Benton County Historical Society receives Donation

The Benton County Historical Society would like to say a BIG "Thank You" to the Vinton Cruise Committee for their generous $1,000 donation to the Depot Roof Project. It is greatly appreciated! Our plan is to replace the asphalt shingles with composite or metal that looks like the original French clay tiles that are still on a portion of the north side of the roof.

Thompson Awarded Benton SWCD Awards Scholarship

                 The Benton Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) Commissioners are very happy to announce, they have selected a recipient for their annual scholarship.  Our recipient will receive a $200 scholarship award.  Students who reside in Benton County were eligible to apply.

Local student honored as 'Best of the Class'

Valedictorians or top graduating seniors were once again honored by KWWL and the University of Northern Iowa on Saturday, April 27. The students took part in KWWL's 35th annual "Best of the Class" celebration. Olivia Marie Coder from Vinton-Shellsburg CSD was honored as a member of the 2019 Best of the Class.

East-Central Iowa REC is proud to announce it has awarded $1,000 scholarships to ten graduating seniors who plan to further their education in a diverse range of programs. The Vision Dysart Committee is pleased to announce the creation of two new illusions and the first annual repainting of The Great Dysart Gorge, an anamorphic illusion that intentionally distorts perspective to give the appearance of dimension. Preparation will begin on Friday, May 3, 2019. From 4 – 6 pm the Dysart Fire Department and community volunteers including the Boy Scouts, will scrub and rinse the Gorge on Main Street Dysart between Clark and Wilson Streets.
