With demonstrated commitments to agricultural science and education, 39 new members were initiated into Iowa State University's Gamma Sigma Delta chapter.
The Iowa Beta Chapter of the Honor Society of Agriculture, Gamma Sigma Delta held its annual award ceremony on April 16, 2024, in Curtiss Hall's Dolezal Auditorium. In addition to installing new members, Iowa State students, faculty, staff and alumni were presented awards and scholarships.
Mission awards were presented to faculty and staff whose work exemplifies Iowa State's mission in teaching, research, extension and international agriculture. The following individuals were recognized:
Karl Kerns, assistant professor of animal science, Mission Award for ResearchBarbara Clawson, student services specialist of horticulture, Mission Award for TeachingSteven Lonergan, Morrill Professor of Animal Science, Mission Award for International AgricultureAdam Thoms, association professor of horticulture, Mission Award for ExtensionThe Alumni Award of Merit was presented to Patrick McGonegle, who earned his bachelor's degree in animal science from Iowa State in 1983. McGonegle is the chief executive officer of the Iowa Pork Producers Association.
Dan Loy, University Professor Emeritus of Animal Science, received the Distinguished Achievement in Agriculture Award. Loy is the former director of the Iowa Beef Center and previously served as an Extension beef specialist for Iowa State. He retired from the university in 2023.
Also during the ceremony, two scholarships were given to Iowa State students. These scholarships recognize students in the sophomore and senior classes with the highest grade point average among their classmates. Calvin Moioffer, sophomore in animal science from Balsam Lake, Wisconsin, and Alexia Corwin, senior in animal science and Spanish from Des Moines, Iowa, were this year's recipients.
