“Smurfs in 3D” plays the Palace Friday, September 2 through Thursday, September 8 at 7 p.m. every evening (except Sunday!). You can also catch this charming film in matinees on Sunday and Monday, September 4 and 5.

Many Palace regulars have rolled their eyes upon hearing “Smurfs” tops the September schedule. However, those few who’ve seen it at one of the more expensive venues, including former Palace manager Lu Karr, said the animated offering is actually surprisingly good.

That Neil Patrick Harris stars in this kiddie flick is also a huge selling point for me. I love that man! He’s a comedic genius. Can’t sleep at night? I highly recommend reruns of his sitcom, “How I Met Your Mother.”

And I must confess I have a soft spot for those little blue guys – Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the whole smurfy gang. You remember Saturday morning cartoons! Those were the days, before we had cable, DISH and Direct TV. No Disney Channel, no eight billion ESPN channels.

HAWKEYE FOOTBALL

And speaking of ESPN – the Palace will show the Hawkeye opener vs. Tennessee Tech on Saturday, September 3 at 11 am. No charge, although a goodwill offering is appreciated.

GARY MORRIS

No Smurfs on Sunday night. Back by popular demand, the Palace presents singer/songwriter Gary Morris at 7 p.m. – live in concert! Tickets are $25 and may be purchased online at www.vintonpalace.org or at the door.
