The Palace screens yet another young adult sci-fi offering this week. “The Giver” opens Friday, September 26 through Thursday, October 2 at 7 pm, and Monday, October 29 at 2 pm.

“The Giver” is based on Lois Lowry’s popular novel of the same name. The 1994 Newbury Medal winner, beloved by many, has been part of reading curriculums for the past twenty years.

Jonas is a young man who lives contentedly in an ideal yet colorless world. Until he encounters The Giver. Jonas learns of a secret past and is compelled to rescue and protect those he loves most, despite extreme odds.

Jeff Bridges, who portrays The Giver, has had this film project in the works for quite some time. He stars with Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Taylor Swift, and Brenton Thwaites (Jacob). It is, perhaps, unfortunate that Bridges’ “Giver” was so long in the making, allowing this classic to be upstaged by “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent” series, to name a few.

This movie is rated PG-13, but kids-in-mind.com rates it pretty low on the sex/violence/language scale, making “The Giver” perfect family fare.
