Do you think teenagers could live without technology for 30 days? This is the question almost 50 Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School Students hope to answer this month with their fun, on-stage performance of "Unplugged" written by Laurie Bryant, directed by Crystal Coder. The Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School Plays are sponsored in part by ACT I of Benton County.
The play "Unplugged" takes place in tiny North Creek, Wisconsin, “The Most Wired Town in America” thanks to a contest-winning local resident Abigail Rickman (Played by 8th grader, Baylee Bruce). As their prize, SOLOtech outfitted the entire town with state-of-the-art wireless technology. Fast forward to now and the citizens of North Creek do absolutely everything virtually. Everything.
But when Tom Morris (played by 7th grader, Will Dudley), the founder of SOLOtech, learns that Abigail has sent back her SOLOpad, claiming life was better without it, he seeks Abigail out, concerned that there might be some truth in what she’s saying. Despite the protests of his assistants (Gracie Horst and Kristina Kirk), he offers the town $30 million dollars to unplug for an entire month.
With several mortified “plugged in” teenagers, an online teacher (Charley Cooling) who hates to dress professionally from the waist down, and Winston, whose very life is depends on technology, this play promises to be entertaining! This comedy hopes to teach everyone a valuable lesson about the place for technology in our lives. Please join the students of VSMS on March 21 and 22 at 7:00 pm at Tilford Auditorium for "Unplugged."
