Storming Viking Swimming is off to a strong start as the team looks to build on last year's highly successful season. On Tuesday, the team split a double dual defeating host Waterloo 94-73 while falling to Cedar Rapids Kennedy 95-74.

The Medley Relay - returning three of four swimmers from last season's state qualifying team - started the night out with a dominating win. Seniors Bradyn Schlief and Carter Kirtz swam the back and breast while Ian Allsup slid to the fly to replace his brother who had graduated. Senior Logan Zearley rounded out the event which cruised to victory by more than 6 seconds. Other event winners on the night included Kirtz in the 200 IM and the 100 Fly and Allsup in the 50 and 100 Free.

Some notable performances were Freshman Broden Farrell who finished second in the 200 Free and 3rd in the 100 Breast. His brother, Sophomore Wes Farrell was 3rd in the 500 Free with a huge, 23-second time drop to finish at 5:46.62. Wes Farrell was also 4th in the 100 Back where Vikes Aleric Weber, Schlief and he finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th - with only 3/10ths of a second separating all three swimmers. Both the 200 and 400 Free Relays finished a strong second as well.

All in all, this was a great performance, with returning guys picking up right around where they left off last year or better, and several new swimmers making immediate contributions on both varsity and junior varsity.

The team travels to Newton on Saturday for the Cardinal Invite where they will face state tough Indianola and Decorah squads as well as host Newton, Grinnell and Oskaloosa.
