VSU Girls swam against the JV team of Cedar Rapids Kennedy last night and came out on top 92-79. VSU had some great swims on the night - a couple of highlights being Carlie Spore and Justyce Dominick achieving goal times in the 500 Freestyle that they've been working toward for a long time. Carlie and Justyce are unique coins in the swimming world - being both strong sprinters and strong distance swimmers.

Carlie has been training for years to get under 7 minutes in the 500 Freestyle - coming within just a few seconds multiple times. Justyce started her freshman year as a strong sprinter for us but found a niche in the longer events as well last season - her goal has long been to touch the wall under 6 minutes. Last night both girls hit their marks.

Carlie finished in 6:55.98 and Justyce in 5.55.56. Carlie got out and sprinted a 50 Free in the very next event to anchor her relay in a 2nd place finish. Earlier in the night, Justyce won the individual 50 Freestyle in her season's best time of 26.48. Not many girls in the state can swim a 26.48 50 Free and then swim a sub-6 minute 500 within the hour. The entire team knew these girls had been pushing for those times - so it was a good celebration to share when they finished.

Our schedule slows down a bit now on the back half of the season. We'll have a week of practices before we head to Grinnell on Sept 28.
