INDEPENDENCE - The Vinton-Shellsburg Viking and Vikette varsity track and field teams took to Lyle Leinbaugh Field in Independence Thursday for the 2021 State Qualifying Meet.
Vikette senior Kayla Griffith won the girls' high jump with a leap of 5-1, and sophomore discus thrower Brylee Bruce took gold with a throw of 124-2. In addition, junior shot putter Abby Bartz threw 37'2", good enough for a wild card berth in Des Moines.
CJ Rickels was second in the high jump with a leap of 6-1 to make him an automatic qualifier. Additionally, junior Logan Zearley ran a 16.33 to advance to State in 110-high hurdles, with the boys' 4*100 meter relay of Landyn Rowe, Alontae Wilson, John Engler and David Lapan-Islas ran a 44.96 to qualify. Rowe, Wilson, Engler and Elijah Kalous combined to advance in the distance medley with a time of 3:47.59.
The 2021 State track meet will run tomorrow through Saturday on the Blue Oval of Drake Stadium. The Vinton-Shellsburg schedule is as follows:
