It has been reported that some Iowa lawmakers have been rolling some reefers full of that Wacky Tobaccy. Now they are pondering the possibility of hashing out a new law that would legalize the herb, marijuana that is, in Iowa. "Are they high?" you might ask. But alas, it is reported that the lawmakers are stone-cold sober, but I smell a skunk!

According to some of Iowa's lawmakers, in the pot of ideas, Iowans are not out in the "weeds." When it comes to this idea, it was not the famous Mary Jane who suggested the new law. It is House Minority Leader Jennifer Konfrst, who believes that the idea is just dope.

Elected in 2019, Konfrst said that Iowans "of all parties" (and I think we all know what kind) "in all corners of the state strongly believe it's time to legalize marijuana." She stated that it is a "common-sense bill that a majority of Iowans want." The bill would expand the medical marijuana program and allow anyone over the age of 21 to legally purchase the drug from a licensed retail store. You'd just pop into the local "Buds, Nuds and Flowers" for a bouquet of their best.

The bill would also seek to decrease penalties for possession and erase records for past non-violent marijuana convictions.

Supporters of the bill say that a 10% excise tax and a 1% local option surcharge on the products. They also believe that it would create more revenue for public education, mental health services and local public safety. However, it is unclear if the added revenue would be enough to cover the additional costs the drug could cause for public education, mental health services and public safety, and that would be a drag if they didn't.

There are plans for the bill to be read in the Iowa House on Wednesday.

Hey, who am I to poke a little fun at this idea. I know nothing about weed, all I know is that if there is marijuana in the house there might be a roach too. So hey, let's go to one of the leading promoters of why it should be legalized, Snoop Dogg himself. He said, "They legalized alcohol, they legalized tobacco. What is it gonna hurt to legalize this medicinal, medical marijuana that's used for purposes of cataracts?"

I mean, if you have cataracts I believe things get a little cloudy so what's a little more haze in the room? I know Willie Nelson uses it a lot, and hey, he's aged gracefully, so he must be on something, I mean on TO something. If it passes out, I mean passes in Iowa, you can bet that you won't find one guy on Willie's bus and that's Toby Keith. He said he won't be smokin' weed with Willie again. Apparently, bad things happen if you do.

So smoke away, just not with Willie.

SL February 22, 2023, 2:00 pm We should absolutely NOT legalize it! Just Say NO!
RL February 22, 2023, 2:29 pm Iowa is a non progressive state. They want younger people to stay or move to Iowa to work. Other states that surrounded Iowa are on the ball. Older people are turning to high grade edibles to relive pain help to sleep or increase their appetite that way they can get rid on some of the junk pills that they are prescribed that some people can't afford.
RL February 22, 2023, 2:37 pm Iowa made over 10 million in sales last year on CBD products last year. Check it out for yourself.

GB February 23, 2023, 11:17 pm It's a scam job. Just like in other states, progressives knew they could never get recreational Marijuana passed into law. They next best thing was to push this idea of "medical Marijuana. " No one wants to deny anyone a drug for medical reasons. It's a lot easier to get a bill passed into law if it is for medical purposes. Once they get that, it's a whole lot easier to get the law to include for recreational purposes. Yet, look at some of the states who took this path. A lot of them wish they hadn't. CBD and the Delta 8 and Delta 9 products is no better. High School students across the country are overdosing in schools and the companies who make these products are packaging their products in packaging very similar to candy such as Skittles and M&M candies. Marijuana is even more unhealthy than tobacco and its the same clowns who pushed for a ban on tobacco products just a few years ago who are now looking to legalize Marijuana. One with the ability to actually think for themselves should be asking themselves why?? It's not for "medical" purposes either. That's the lie they push.
AM February 24, 2023, 3:35 am I appreciate the satire! Individuals that oppose the legalization of marijuana and other plant-based medicines that have been used all around the world throughout human history need to lighten up! Pun intended. Outdated propaganda has left a significant percentage of our society severely uninformed about the potential benefits of marijuana, as you can see in some of the comments. 1) No, marijuana is not more harmful than tobacco. Commercial tobacco has a long list of carcinogenic additives, and some studies even show that cancer rates are lower in marijuana users than the general public. 2) Pharmaceutical companies typically only test new products for approximately 6 months before they are approved for human use and placed on the market. The efficacy rates when compared with placebo are marginal. 3) The War on Drugs has been used to target minorities and marginalized populations since its inception. June 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of the War on Drugs, in which our government has spent over a trillion dollars. Despite the heavy investment and allocation of resources, many experts agree that the efforts have done more harm than good, and studies show that drug use is once again on the rise. The Sentencing Project has a wonderful website that examines incarceration statistics on a state level, and its definitely worth checking out. We have the highest incarceration rates in the world, pew research reports that in 2018, 40% of the drug-related arrests in the US were for marijuana possession. 4) The kids that are overdosing may test positive for marijuana, but there have never been any documented deaths attributed directly to marijuana use. What they are overdosing on, is pharmaceuticals such as opiates and benzos, often mixed with alcohol or other street drugs. Also, no one is handing out their edibles to children at Halloween. 5) Growing evidence supports 20+ disease/disorder categories that showed significant reduction in symptoms with minimal negative side effects, including epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, pain, PTSD, cancer, and glaucoma. 6) Look at the state of the economy in the states that have legalized marijuana. Look at the crime rates. Look at the effect on overall mental health. Medical decisions should be between an individual and their health care professional, and should be based on the evidence available. If you will not benefit from medical or recreational use of marijuana, then do not use it, but do not assume the right to deny someone else the option.
KG February 24, 2023, 1:47 pm Everyone has a choice .. what I'd like to see is what it would mean to Ia economy. I've heard states used the income to subsidize property tax, vehicle licenses ect. That would directly impact iowa citizens. Why are adjoining states taking revenue away from ia. Because we are allowing them to. What are other states using the income for?
